New Delhi (India), October 19: Nina Sarkar, hailing from a humble, non-media background, found herself thrust into the limelight unexpectedly when she starred in the popular T-Series music video "Leja Leja Re" back in 2007.
By the age of 18, this young model was jetting off to exotic locales, shooting for numerous international brands. However, unforeseen challenges soon arose.
"I had no idea about the consequences of launching my career at such a young age," she admits. "I was 18, suddenly had thousands of fans and followers – the response was positive. It can only get better from here, right?"
Following the video's success, a flood of calls from film production houses inundated the teenager, accompanied by unsettling accounts of casting couch experiences.
"My mom accompanied me everywhere. She was as clueless as I was. My dad, who worked in finance, had reservations about a career in the media. But we were unprepared for the blatant requests for 'compromise.' Men in their 40s and 50s would touch my mom's feet, telling her that I was like their daughter too, and then take me into the audition room – with the door open so my mom could see me – and would whisper that I had to 'compromise' and 'be in a relationship with them' to advance my acting career. I always declined and left quietly, not informing my mom until we got home. I stuck with modeling, which felt much cleaner. It was a different time back then, before the #MeToo movement."
Before the era of Instagram and influencer fame, models didn't enjoy the same level of recognition or earnings as actresses. Nina, who wasn't even trained as an actress and struggled with Hindi, was told that as long as she was willing to 'compromise,' her linguistic abilities wouldn't be an issue. She was even pressured to undergo breast enhancement surgery, a nose job, and lip fillers, all of which she firmly refused, crediting her parents for her resilience.
"I'm incredibly fortunate. I witnessed so many young girls who couldn't afford to eat or pay their rent because they defied their parents' wishes and ventured to Mumbai without the kind of support I had to walk away from such projects."
Subsequently, Nina's interactions with fans took a dark turn. People obtained her private phone number and even her home address, leading to harassment, stalking, and rape threats. During her stint as an anchor for a prominent English TV channel, a particularly chilling incident unfolded. Two men appeared on set, demanding her immediate departure. Fortunately, the channel's staff hid her in a room for nearly two hours, claiming she wasn't on the premises.
"The kind producer informed me that he was going to lock the green room door from the outside and cut the power supply to conceal my presence. The men claimed their boss from another state was a big fan and insisted they bring me to him immediately. My co-anchor and I remained silent until they departed, and we sneaked out through the back door hours later."
These experiences left Nina deeply traumatized, prompting her to withdraw from the public eye. After extensive discussions with her equally concerned family, they collectively decided she would bid farewell to Mumbai. It simply wasn't worth it.
As years went by, fans online wondered about the girl from their beloved music video, questioning why they couldn't find her name anywhere. However, Nina was embarked on a path to realize her dreams of becoming a writer and businesswoman.
"I have a fulfilling career now, running my own company, and I've never been happier. I'm not constantly under the pressure to maintain a certain body image, and I'm not judged for my food choices or attire. I'm no longer constantly scrutinized by people I barely know. I cherish the positive experiences from my acting career, but the negative ones far outweigh them."
When asked about her decision to step out of the shadows, she remarked, "Times have changed, and conditions for women have improved significantly. At 35, I'm older and wiser, and I began opening up when I realized it was making a positive impact on the lives of young girls. Messages from young women who relate to my choice to speak openly about mental health and wellness, to combat body-shaming, and to live life on my terms – that has been my primary motivation to gradually reintroduce myself online."
